Advanced vs Qualified Signatures

An advanced signature guarantees authenticity and integrity of a digital signature. These are considered legally binding and are commonly used for contracts and administrative procedures. In order to comply with eIDAS, an advanced signature must:

  • Be uniquely linked to the signatory
  • Capable of identifying the signatory
  • Created using electronic signature creation data that the signatory can, with a high level of confidence, use under his sole control.
  • Linked to the data signed in such a way that any subsequent change in the data is detectable

Certificates for Advanced Signatures are delivered digitally.

A qualified signature is an advanced electronic signature that is created by a qualified signature creation device (QSCD) and which is based on a qualified certificate for electronic signatures. Qualified signatures for individuals are issued on a USB and provide the same legal validity as wet-ink, handwritten signatures. A qualified certificate can only be purchased from a Certificate Authority that is accredited as a Qualified Trust Service Provider like SSL247. To comply with eIDAS regulations, the creation and signature data must be stored on a highly reliable and assured device, such as cryptographic USB Tokens.

Certificates for Qualified Signatures are delivered on a physical token.
